01 / The constitutional watershed

Twelve openings, one changing river

The chart traces 26 fixed endpoint contributions through 12 historical stages. Hover or click any stream; use the width control to ask a different question of the same topology.

WIDTH FOLLOWS

The river repeatedly fragments and consolidates. It narrows sharply into the North German Confederation and Empire, divides into occupation and postwar structures, then restores eastern Länder and reunites Berlin in 1990. Width represents a fixed share of modern Germany, not the historical size of any state.

Width currently follows the equal mean of modern area, population, and GDP shares. It does not estimate a historical state’s land, population, economy, legitimacy, or influence. Labels are intentionally limited to larger streams; every container remains available through hover and the accessible table.

02 / Three shapes worth finding

The structure carries the argument.

1648 / exits become visibleThe river is also defined by what leaves it.Westphalia formalizes Swiss and Dutch separation while the core territory breaks into fifteen compressed streams. The missing tributaries matter even when their widths cannot be compared honestly.

1867 / a narrow throatUnification begins as an exclusion and a bottleneck.Four southern states remain separate while most northern contributions compress into the Prussian-led North German Confederation. Austria’s confederal lands leave the route entirely.

1957 → 1990 / identities returnAdministrative disappearance does not end a regional lineage.The eastern contributions disappear inside one GDR stream, then fan back into five restored Länder. Berlin’s halves recombine on a separate path.

03 / The tributaries outside the core

Some of the most important movements cannot share this width scale.

The conserved river follows only land inside the 1990 endpoint. The source dataset separately records territorial arrivals and departures whose defensible measurements are historical area, contemporary population, or no comparable quantity at all.

1866 / exitAustrian lands of the German Confederation

excluded from the Prussian-led national unification. The Confederation included only parts of the Habsburg Empire, so modern Austria is not a defensible numeric substitute.

Use a substantial but unscaled dashed branch labeled 'Austria excluded'; avoid using modern Austria as the width.

1871 / entryAlsace-Lorraine enters the German Empire

annexed as Reichsland Elsaß-Lothringen. Area and 1910 population refer to the Reichsland, not to modern administrative regions.

Area-scaled external branch is defensible; population is contemporaneous but should not be mixed with 2022 core population widths.

1919 / exitAlsace-Lorraine returned to France

territorial loss under the postwar settlement. Included inside the aggregate Versailles-loss row X09; do not sum both.

Use the same width as X07 to create a visible enter-and-exit loop.

1919–1920 / exitAll European territorial losses under Versailles (aggregate)

Use as one aggregate area-scaled exit, or decompose it—but not both. The source says 'more than' 27,000 square miles.

1945 / exitTerritories east of the Oder-Neisse line plus Danzig

placed under Polish administration after the war. The cited 103,000 km² includes the German eastern territories beyond the Oder/Lausatian Neisse, southern East Prussia, and Danzig.

Use an area-scaled exit. Do not treat it as a share of the 2022 German economy or population.

04 / What the width means

A modern endpoint carried backward—carefully

Each core endpoint atom carries a fixed share of Germany's official 2022 area, population, and nominal GDP through every historical stage. The balanced metric is the arithmetic mean of those three percentage shares and therefore remains additive and mass-conserving.

Core widths show how much of modern Germany's endpoint passes through a historical node. They are not estimates of that node's historical population, economy, or total territorial extent.

The model is deliberately compressed. Hundreds of imperial jurisdictions become regional macro-streams; external branches remain annotations when no compatible value exists. That is a visible limit, not hidden precision.
