READ BEFORE DEPLOYMENT

The same data can support different readings.

The same incoming signal can be a full chart or a small status mark. Change the signal, compare the sixteen forms, and read the question each is intended to answer. Context mode pares back labels and decoration, so check which comparisons remain clear before using that treatment in an application.

ICON

Resembles what it means. A map keeps the shape of place; a filled area resembles volume.

INDEX

Points to a condition. A trace records change; a settled particle records forces acting on it.

SYMBOL

Depends on convention. Length, color, bins, and quartiles only speak after a reader learns the code.

FINAL OPERATING RULE

Compact does not mean context-free.

When a small chart omits axes and labels, the surrounding sentence needs to name the measure, unit, population and time. Read the sentence and sparkline together to check whether the comparison is clear.

Real data:World Bank · World Development Indicators, retrieved 2026-06-30. Sixteen countries spanning every World Bank region and income group; indicators are 2023 snapshots and 1990–2023 series. Geographic marks use approximate country centers. Network, flow, and semantic-distance relationships are deterministic derivations of those indicator values and World Bank groupings.
